Thailand will join the Formula One calendar in 2014, according to the governor of the Sports Authority of Thailand.

Kanokphand Chulakasem met with Bernie Ecclestone during the Singapore Grand Prix weekend to discuss hosting a race, with the Bangkok Post reporting that a deal was agreed in principal for Thailand to come on to the calendar in 2014.

"It will be a city race like that in Singapore and Monaco," Kanokphand said. "It will be a night race like the Singapore Grand Prix."

However, Kanokphand also said that further talks were required to finalise the deal, with the race hosting fee still yet to be agreed. The report also stated 'Tourism and Sports Minister Chumpol Silpa-archa earlier said the government would shoulder 60 per cent of the total cost and the rest would be paid by private companies such as Red Bull and Singha.'

While Thailand has never hosted a world championship race, over 100,000 people turned out to see Mark Webber carry out a demonstration run for Red Bull in Bangkok in 2010.
