Arsenal have confirmed that midfielder Abou Diaby will miss the start of the new season after undergoing surgery on an ankle injury.

Manager Arsene Wenger confirmed the 25-year-old is set to miss another five weeks of action, after he went under the knife during the summer break.

Diaby has struggled to stay injury free since sustaining a fractured, dislocated ankle in 2006. Last campaign the France international managed just 13 Premier League starts for Arsenal.

The former Auxerre midfielder had surgery on a troublesome ankle problem at the end of June, meaning he will likely miss the start of the new season.

Wenger told the club's official website: "Abou had ankle surgery during the break. Normally he should be back eight to ten weeks after his surgery, which means the end of August."

Arsenal are also sweating on the fitness of Theo Walcott after Wenger confirmed the England forward has undergone a scan on an ankle issue.
