Liverpool have announced on their official website that Newcastle have agreed to sell Jose Enrique to the Merseyside club.

A deal worth a reported £6 million has been settled between the two clubs, with the Magpies well aware that their Spain international no longer wants to stay at St James' Park.

Kenny Dalglish has been keen on Enrique throughout the summer, seemingly cooling interest when Enrique stated he wanted Champions League football.

That no longer seems an issue, and it is expected that his medical and negotiations over personal terms will also run smoothly.

A statement on Liverpool's official website read: "Liverpool FC confirmed today that they had agreed a fee with Newcastle United for the transfer of Jose Enrique. The club have now been given permission to discuss personal terms with the player, who will travel to Liverpool to undergo a medical."

Enrique will compete with Fabio Aurelio, Emiliano Insua and Jack Robinson for a starting berth.
