Birmingham have received no formal approach from Arsenal for defender Scott Dann, according to Blues manager Chris Hughton.

The Gunners were reported to have opened talks earlier this week over a possible £6 million move for Dann, 24, whose lengthy absence through injury last season is blamed by many Birmingham fans for their relegation from the Premier League.

However, Arsene Wenger claimed on Thursday that he has "no need for another" defender and Hughton, who has undertaken a major rebuilding job at St Andrew's, has denied having any knowledge of an offer.

"I'm not aware of any contact from Arsenal," Hughton told The Sun. "But whether Scott will be with us after the deadline, I don't know."

The centre-back proved himself one of the top-flight's most consistent centre-backs over the past couple of seasons, forming an impressive partnership with Roger Johnson at the heart of Blues' defence.

But an injury in the club's Carling Cup final victory over Arsenal led to him missing the entire run-in, and he watched from the sidelines as Alex McLeish's side were demoted to the Championship.
