Arsene Wenger has dismissed talk of a move for Werder Bremen centre-back Per Mertesacker and said Arsenal do not need to strengthen the position.

Arsenal have been linked with a number of defenders this summer including Mertesacker, Phil Jagielka, Christopher Samba, Gary Cahill and, most recently, Scott Dann.

However, with Thomas Vermaelen, Laurent Koscielny, Johan Djourou and Sebastien Squillaci all on the books, Wenger denied talk of a move to bolster his options in the position.

"We currently have four central defenders," Wenger told German publication Kicker, "and so there is no need for another."

Despite Wenger's words, there have been strong reports that Arsenal have held talks with Birmingham over Dann and a move is said to be close.

Reacting to the speculation earlier this month, Dann told Sky Sports News: "Obviously I'm an ambitious person and I want to play at the top level. Everyone who knows me knows that."

Birmingham have been forced to allow their key players to leave the club following their relegation as a result of financial problems.
