Wenger rubbishes Tevez bid talk

Arsene Wenger has rubbished talk linking Arsenal with a bid for wantaway Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez.

Wenger has a huge transfer kitty burning a hole in his pocket following the sale of Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona and he has been linked with a host of big-name signings.

Wenger has his scouts scouring the globe, but a player closer to London has been linked in recent days. Tevez is looking to move on from City and saw one avenue blocked when Corinthians failed to strike a deal before the Brazilian transfer window slammed shut.

Tevez has few options available to him and may have to kick his heels in Manchester until January if a deal is not struck before August 31.

It had been claimed Wenger had been alerted to the possibility of signing the Argentina international, but the Frenchman has played down such talk along with reports of a bid for Shakhtar Donetsk's Jadson.

"No," Wenger replied in response to talk of moves for Jadson and Tevez. "Those names, we do not envisage one or the other."

Wenger is still hopeful of adding to his squad this month, as he said: "We can still bring one or two players in as we are a bit short. There are ins and outs and we have been very busy negotiating out."

He remains hopeful Samir Nasri will remain at the club but admits the club are not in a strong position.

Manchester City have made clear their intention to sign Nasri before the close of the transfer window and, with just one year remaining on his contract, Wenger must persuade the player to commit to an extension if he is to avoid losing him.

"Ideally I want Samir Nasri to stay, but as much as we were in a strong position on the contract side with Cesc, the situation is a bit different," he said. "Hopefully we can sort the situation out."

Nasri, though, has expressed disappointment that Arsenal fans sang an offensive song about him at Newcastle. "I heard what the fans were singing about me on Saturday and it is really disrespectful because I'm still a [sic] Arsenal player," he tweeted.
