Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has given his backing to Manchester City counterpart Roberto Mancini over his handling of the ongoing Carlos Tevez saga.

Mancini is adamant that the Argentine will never play for the club again, after he reportedly refused to come on as a substitute in City's Champions League defeat against Bayern Munich on Tuesday.

Tevez has claimed that he was "misunderstood" but Ferguson, who worked with Tevez for two seasons when the striker was at Old Trafford, believes the Italian has handled the incident in the right way.

"Roberto Mancini has come out of it showing his strength of character and management," Ferguson said. "We've all experienced our own difficulties in management and you cope with it as best you can. My only experience is strong management is important.

"There is nobody more important than the manager at a football club."
