Manchester United will be shorn of the services of midfielder Anderson until February on account of injury.

The Brazilian midfielder has picked up a knee injury and is being sent to a specialist in Portugal for a thorough assessment.

The news has come as a surprise to manager Sir Alex Ferguson who is also without Tom Cleverley.

"It's not great news with Anderson, we don't think he will be fit until February, " Ferguson said at his press conference on Friday. "We've sent him back to Portugal to see the specialist who operated on his knee, so it's a blow. We did not expect that one."

With Paul Scholes having retired, Anderson had been expected to take on a prominent role in the middle of the park. He featured regularly in the first couple of months, but has not figured since being replaced on 80 minutes in the win over Otelul Galati on November 2.
