Sir Alex Ferguson has suggested Manchester United are unlikely to raid the market for a midfielder in January.

Ferguson looks short of midfield options, with injuries to Anderson and Tom Cleverley coming on top of the retirement of Paul Scholes.

A lot of pressure is falling on the shoulders of Darren Fletcher, Michael Carrick and veteran Ryan Giggs, while Wayne Rooney has on occasions dropped back from the forward line - with Phil Jones moving up from defence.

With United lagging behind Manchester City in the title race, there could be a temptation to bring in a new face but Ferguson feels he has the quality in his ranks to cope.

"It's dead easy to say you'll go out and buy players," Ferguson said. "But it's not easy to buy players who are good enough for Manchester United, especially in January.

"We'll be okay, we have a strong squad.

"We're not as bad as people think we are in midfield with the experience of Giggs, Carrick and Fletcher, and if we get Cleverley back for Christmas, that'll be a bonus."
