Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand is relishing the prospect of a FA Cup third round clash against rivals Manchester City in the FA Cup third round.

The clash between current holders City and Premier League champions United is the standout tie of the round, which will be played in the New Year. United will be desperate to put October's 6-1 defeat behind them and avenge an FA Cup semi-final defeat to City last year.

While most Premier League clubs would prefer to avoid Premier League opposition in the early stages of the cup competition, Ferdinand is excited by the prospect of a Manchester derby.

"Third round FA cup game versus Man City. Great game to kick off this year's FA cup, [I] can't wait," Ferdinand wrote on his Twitter page.

Chelsea host Portsmouth in a repeat of the 2010 final, while Newcastle and Blackburn will take part in an all-Premier League tie.
