Jonathan Woodgate believes his old club Tottenham Hotspur will be Manchester City's main challengers in the Premier League this season.

Woodgate, who left Spurs for Stoke City in the summer on a free transfer after an injury-ravaged spell in north London, was part of the Potters' team which inflicted a 2-1 defeat on Harry Redknapp's side on Sunday - a first loss in 12 matches.

Despite that setback, Woodgate thinks Spurs are one of the best sides Stoke have faced this season - and they could even win the title.

Woodgate said: "Spurs are an awesome team. There's pace all over the pitch, it's frightening for the opposing team. And with the ability they've got as well as speed, they are going to be a good side.

"Along with Man City, they have the best squad pound for pound. They are second only to City without a doubt. I think Spurs will go close to winning the league - if not this year then the next.

"I couldn't tell you if there's a missing ingredient as I've never won a title. Maybe it's to come to Stoke and get a result, to grind out a 2-2 even when they go down to 10 men."

Spurs had Younes Kaboul sent off in a defeat which left Redknapp fuming over the performance of referee Chris Foy.
