Newcastle United insist they have not launched a bid to bring Liverpool striker Andy Carroll back to St James' Park.

Reports on Wednesday suggested Liverpool were willing to let Carroll leave the club for as little as £10m - speculation which the Reds swiftly dismissed as "complete nonsense".

Liverpool are currently without their main striker, Luis Suarez, who is serving a suspension for racially abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra. Carroll therefore stands to have a prolonged run in the first team over the coming weeks.

Carroll left Newcastle for Liverpool in a £35 million move in January 2011, but has failed to fire since making the switch. He was laid low by injury early in his Anfield career, and this season has scored just twice in 18 Premier League appearances.

Managing director Derek Llambias said to Sky Sports News: "There has been no contact between Newcastle and Liverpool with regards to Andy Carroll."

Meanwhile, Carroll's agent denies any role in circulating his player's name for a potential transfer - and says he was never asked to do so.
