Henry loan unlikely to be extended

Thierry Henry's loan deal at Arsenal is set to come to an end next week, according to New York Red Bulls boss Hans Backe.

Henry has enjoyed a memorable return to the Gunners, with the club's all-time leading goalscorer bagging the winner in the FA Cup third-round victory against Leeds United, before scoring in the 7-1 thrashing of Blackburn last weekend.

However, despite Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger remaining hopeful the deal could be extended until the end of the month, it appears the striker is set to return to the MLS on schedule.

"When I spoke to him, he told me that he was 100 per cent coming back on February 17," Backe said.

"What I know, it's only rumours. I haven't heard anything from them [Arsenal] about extending the loan."

Speculation was rife the Frenchman would stay on in London after he was named in Arsenal's Champions League squad. Should Henry return to New York next week, he will also miss the north London derby against Tottenham.
