Downing calls on Gerrard to play on

Stewart Downing has urged his Liverpool team-mate Steven Gerrard not to turn his back on England after this summer's European Championship.

Gerrard is in line to take on the captaincy of England, following the FA's decision to take it away from John Terry, but his long-term future for his country is in doubt after he said at the weekend that he was considering quitting after Euro 2012.

Such a move would be a benefit to Liverpool, but Downing is convinced the midfielder can play on for club and country and has urged him to do just that.

"It is the manager's decision," Downing said when asked if he would endorse the appointment of Gerrard as skipper. "But he has captained Liverpool for many years and has done a great job. If he is picked to do that for England I am sure he will carry that on.

"He is a big player for Liverpool and England, a great influence on players, and he drives teams on. If he is given the captaincy then great.

"You have seen the lift he has given us at Liverpool since he came back from injury.

"I have not spoken to Steven about if he is going to retire after the tournament. I would be selfish and hope he plays on. He is a great player for England and we need players like him in the team."
