Steven Gerrard's early exit from England's clash with Netherlands has been described as precautionary on account of a tight hamstring.

Gerrard was replaced by Daniel Sturridge 33 minutes into the game at Wembley, and it was a worry for Liverpool fans to see the midfielder disappear straight down the tunnel.

He played for over two hours in Liverpool's Carling Cup win against Cardiff on Sunday, but the decision to replace him after half an hour was never likely to be tactical.

He will head back to Liverpool for assessment, but the early signs are positive. Gerrard reported feeling his hamstring tighten and with a big game against Arsenal at the weekend, he was taken off as a precaution.

"Gerrard, he was just feeling a little bit tight so we took him off as a precautionary (measure) on the grounds we were only going to play him for 45 minutes anyway," interim England manager Stuart Pearce said.
