Steven Gerrard is ready to pep up Liverpool's push for a top-four finish in the Premier League by returning to full training.

Gerrard sat out the Reds' loss to Arsenal at the weekend, having tweaked a hamstring on England duty the previous week, but is in contention to face Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

The Reds are planning to put Gerrard through his paces in a full training session on Thursday and provided he comes through unscathed, he will be in contention for the trip to the North East - as will defender Glen Johnson.

"Steven and Glen are back in training today, so we'll see how they are," Reds boss Kenny Dalglish told the club's official website.

Asked whether the return of Gerrard will provide Liverpool with a boost, Dalglish said: "I wouldn't restrict it to just Stevie - it's a good boost for us to have anybody back, Steven included.

"Having Glen back as well, who was doing fantastic, will be good for us. We'll see how they do in training and judge it from there."

Liverpool are 10 points behind Arsenal in the battle for Champions League places, but do have a game in hand.
