Tottenham Hotspur boss Harry Redknapp has defended his notorious comment about Darren Bent's finishing, saying "it was only the truth".

When the pair were both at Spurs, Bent missed an easy opportunity that Redknapp claimed his wife Sandra would have been able to stick in the back of the net.

It was a remark that riled Bent, who subsequently moved to Sunderland before ending up at current club Aston Villa - but Redknapp remains unrepentant.

"You've got to be careful," Redknapp told the Radio Times. "I once said, 'My old woman could have scored that,' about a goal Darren Bent missed. Bent then sulked, rang his agent, his agent rings the chairman and says he wants to leave. It was only the truth, wasn't it?"

Redknapp, the leading candidate to take the England job, could yet manage Bent at Euro 2012 - although he said this week that he was in two minds as to whether or not he wanted to lead the Three Lions.

Bent is also an injury doubt for the tournament, having picked up an ankle injury against Wigan.
