Bolton Wanderers' Fabrice Muamba has got out of bed for the first time since he suffered a cardiac arrest during a match.

Muamba's recovery continues after he collapsed during Bolton's abandoned FA Cup sixth round game against Tottenham at White Hart Lane earlier this month, with the London Chest Hospital upgrading his condition to "serious but stable" as he remains in intensive care.

"Fabrice Muamba remains in intensive care at the London Chest Hospital where his condition is serious but stable," a joint statement from the club and hospital read. "He continues to make encouraging progress in his recovery. Over the weekend he has been able to sit out of bed for a short time, watch television and has begun to eat.

"However, he will need to continue to be closely monitored by the medical team for some time.

"His family requests that he receive no more visitors for the moment, outside of immediate family and members of Bolton Wanderers."

A delegation of Muamba's team-mates is expected to visit the 23-year-old prior to the re-arranged tie against Spurs, which takes place on Tuesday evening.

Elsewhere, FIFA has revealed it will extend its research into cases of cardiac arrest involving footballers.

Jiri Dvorak, the organisation's chief medical officer, told the Associated Press: "We have invited all national team doctors to establish a worldwide database for cases of sudden cardiac arrest ... [which] will lead to analysis of the risk factors."
