Leighton Baines is convinced Everton are "pushing on" as a club ahead of their FA Cup semi-final with Liverpool, believing the Toffees took a major step forward with their work in the January transfer window.

David Moyes was able to bring in some excellent additions to boost his Everton squad, not least with the capture of Nikica Jelavic from Rangers and the return of Steven Pienaar from Tottenham.

The blue half of Merseyside is currently lording it over the red half as Everton sit higher than Liverpool in the Premier League table, and they can really claim the bragging rights if successful in Saturday's FA Cup semi-final.

Liverpool have had the better of recent Wembley showdowns between the two clubs, winning the 1986 and 1989 finals, but the most recent tie between the pair was won by Everton at Goodison Park.

Baines is excited by what the future holds for his club, and he believes Everton will be a totally improved side from the one Liverpool beat twice earlier in the season, insisting every player in the squad has upped his performance.

"It's important that we know that the club isn't standing still," Baines told ESPN. "That's why January was such a big month for us - to get such good players in was a boost for all of us.

"It gave us a lift around the place and we've pushed on since then. Not only the players who have come in, but the ones who were already here have improved their performance."
