Roberto Di Matteo believes Didier Drogba is worthy of a new contract at Chelsea.

Drogba's current deal is winding down and talks have so far failed to bear fruit, leading to suggestions that the Ivorian could walk away from Stamford Bridge - possibly for a new challenge in China.

The forward proved what he is still capable of with a dominant display in the Blues' 1-0 win over Barcelona in the Champions League and his agent said on Friday that Drogba could still stay at Chelsea.

It is believed Drogba is looking for a two-year contract and although not keen to tell the club what to do, Di Matteo clearly feels the striker can still cut it in the Premier League.

"Didier's fit and he is certainly capable of playing in the Premier League for Chelsea, or someone else next year," Di Matteo said. "He could do it for another couple of years at this level. He won't retire.

"Whether he'll be here or elsewhere, I don't know. He's part of the history of this club, like many players, and always will be. But the final decision is for the club to take."
