Pardew shrugs off final day disappointment

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew applauded his squad for a "tremendous season", despite seeing their dream of Champions League qualification die on the final day.

The Magpies lost to Everton at Goodison Park to dash their dreams of finishing inside the top four, although victories for both Tottenham and Arsenal ensured they would finish fifth regardless of the result in their game.

The club nevertheless finished above the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool, however, an impressive result after starting the season with some critics tipping the side for relegation. Despite the positive campaign, Pardew is looking for further progress next season.

"It has been a tremendous season. We have played every game to try and win," Pardew said. "Even here, at 2-0 down, we were pushing the game. We are very proud of what we have achieved.

"But it is something to build on. We have got to improve in certain areas. But we have made great inroads to the bigger clubs. That is credit to the players.

"We have got a European campaign on top, so it won't be easy. But it has been a magnificent effort.

"To finish above the likes of Everton, Liverpool and Chelsea, it is a fantastic achievement."
