City wouldn't have coped with our injury crisis - Rio

Rio Ferdinand has suggested that a rash of costly injuries scuppered Manchester United's chances of winning the Premier League title this season.

United were unable to call on the likes of Tom Cleverley, Anderson, Darren Fletcher and Nemanja Vidic for long spells during the season, and only two players - Wayne Rooney and Patrice Evra - started more than 30 league games.

Nonetheless, they came within a couple of minutes of lifting the championship, until Sergio Aguero's injury-time strike earned Manchester City a 3-2 victory over ten-man QPR - and the title.

"It's a cruel way to have lost it," Ferdinand told Sky Sports. "But you have to congratulate the other team. Any team that wins it obviously deserves it and they have played well throughout the season. It's now about us dusting ourselves down and winning the title back next season.

"This year we've had to use our squad to the maximum and that bodes well for the future. That's one positive we can take from this. I don't think any other team could have coped the way we have."
