Gourlay coy on Di Matteo future

Roberto Di Matteo has done "fantastically well" in his time as interim Chelsea manager but chief executive Ron Gourlay stopped short of giving the Italian his full backing for the permanent role.

Since Di Matteo took the reins from the sacked Andre Villas-Boas in March, the Blues have gone on to lift both the FA Cup and Champions League trophies.

And, while Di Matteo's future is still up in the air, Gourlay said the club will be sitting down in the next fortnight to discuss who they want to install as the permanent manager, although he remained tight-lipped on whether incumbent Di Matteo would get the nod.

"When he was given the job as interim coach we said 'let's get through to the end of the season, we'll set ourselves goals and then when that season ends we'll sit down and discuss things'," he told Sky Sports News.

"While we hoped to get to Munich, at that time we didn't know we were going to get there and so we just asked him to give us his best and let's see where we go. Everyone got behind him and here we are.

"Now we've got to sit down over the next week or two and do what's right for the football club and I know the fans will be pushing for Robbie but we've got to look at the season, see what worked for us, see what mistakes we made and put those right and take it forward."

Despite not giving anything away, Gourlay reiterated what a great job Di Matteo has done in such a short period of time. He added: "He's done fantastically well, I'm really proud of him and what he achieved."
