England's players will receive a visit by UEFA officials this week and warned about their conduct at this summer's European Championship.

European football's governing body will send representatives to all 16 participating nations and make it clear that dangerous play and the harassing of referees and their assistants will not be tolerated.

"UEFA does not want to see a referee surrounded by protesting players," Pierluigi Collina, a member of UEFA's refereeing committee, said. "The instigators will be shown yellow cards."

England captain Steven Gerrard hit Norway's Tom Hogli with a crunching tackle during the 1-0 win on Saturday and was warned by German referee Michael Weiner that he would have picked up a booking had it been a European Championship game.

"One of our main objectives is to protect the players," Collina said.
