Jermain Defoe has left England's Euro 2012 squad and flown back to England following the death of his father.

The striker is expected to return to Poland for the tournament "in due course", but could miss the opening group game against France on Monday.

The FA has confirmed that no replacement will be called up and Defoe will be given the time he needs.

"England striker Jermain Defoe has returned home to England this morning following the passing of his father overnight," an FA statement read.

"Jermain will re-join the England Euro squad in due course. There will be no replacement player called in."

Tottenham have also offered their sympathies to Defoe. The Premier League side said in a statement: "Everyone at the club sends their sincere condolences to Jermain and his family."
