England battle off-field issues

Ashley Cole and John Terry both trained on Friday as Roy Hodgson put his England squad through their paces ahead of their Euro 2012 opener.

England face France in Donetsk on Monday, and ahead of the contest had concerns over both of the Chelsea defenders left in the squad - with Terry completing his recovery from a hamstring injury and Cole suffering with a stomach bug that forced him to miss a team engagement on Thursday evening.

While neither player played a part in the entire session - which took place at Stadion Suche Stawy in Krakow in front of hundreds of locals - they both completed some initial warm-ups and light exercises before heading off for a pre-planned session in the gym and pool.

If either player suffers a setback before Monday Hodgson does have alternatives - with Leighton Baines able to deputise for Cole at left-back and Phil Jagielka ready to slot in alongside Joleon Lescott in the heart of defence.

Seven other players joined Cole and Terry in spending much of the session indoors, as they followed a specially-tailored recovery plan following an intensive training session with Hodgson on Thursday.

Of those who did take a full part in the session out on the Krakow pitch, the suspended Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck spent time working together - perhaps suggesting Ashley Young and Andy Carroll are Hodgson's preferred attacking pairing - while Stewart Downing was working on his crossing from the left flank and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was operating from a slightly deeper, more central role.

Hodgson has previously acknowledged that the wide positions in his team are where he has the most decisions to make.

Jermain Defoe was the only squad member missing from either session, as he remains in England following the death of his father during the week. However, the Tottenham forward is expected to rejoin the squad in time for the group opener.
