Schalke boss Huub Stevens says he will attempt to lure outgoing Chelsea forward Salomon Kalou to the Veltins-Arena this summer, but faces competition from Liverpool.

Kalou's contract expires in June and Stevens confirmed his admiration of the Ivory Coast international. He also proclaimed an interest in Tottenham's Rafael Van der Vaart, but admits Kalou leaving on a free transfer may see the Bundesliga club opt to sign the 26-year-old instead, if they can outbid Liverpool.

"Kalou is a Bosman player this summer," Stevens said. "It's obvious; there are many other clubs keen on him. Liverpool for example.

"But I know for sure he wants to move away from England. This could be our chance."

Kalou may be seen by Liverpool as a replacement for Dirk Kuyt, who recently signed for Turkish side Fenerbahce. New manager Brendan Rodgers worked with Kalou at Chelsea.
