Ireland coach Giovanni Trapattoni has hit back at Roy Keane following his criticism of their Euro 2012 campaign.

Ireland will be on their way home after their final Group C game with Italy, following defeats to Croatia and Spain.

Keane is a legend in the Irish game and while working as a TV pundit, he claimed the squad and management have let the fans down. "The players and supporters have to change their mentality," Keane said. "It's nonsense to say how great the fans are. The supporters want players to do much better than giving away daft goals like they did."

The Manchester United great's comments brought a spiky response from Trapattoni who said: "Roy, why? Are you a big boss?

"Roy Keane has been a very great player. But what did he do after he stopped playing?

"With this team, I'm proud. Tomorrow we start for the future."
