Spanish midfielder Guti has questioned former club Real Madrid's reported pursuit of Tottenham Hotspur playmaker Luka Modric.

Modric said this week that he is "going to play in the Champions League next season", fuelling speculation he is on the brink of leaving Spurs, who have not qualified for that competition.

Reports in England and Spain suggest that Modric will hand in a transfer request, and that his agent has already held a meeting with Real.

But Guti, who played over 500 games for Real before leaving two years ago, feels that Manchester City's David Silva would represent a better purchase.

"He hasn't even been the key man for Tottenham," Guti said. "I don't think he's done enough to play for Madrid.

"I would go for David Silva in this position. He's ideal for Real Madrid: young, talented with potential, and has achieved great things with Manchester City and Spain."
