Harry Redknapp is backing prospective Tottenham Hotspur boss Andre Villas-Boas to challenge for the Premier League title.

Redknapp parted company with Tottenham this month after his side's fourth-placed finish in the league did not prove enough to secure Champions League football for next season - as sixth-placed Chelsea will instead have the chance to defend the title they won in Munich.

Former Chelsea manager Villas-Boas, sacked by the Blues in March, has been strongly linked with the vacant post at White Hart Lane, with reports suggesting the Portuguese's appointment is imminent.

Redknapp is backing the ex-Porto coach to impress at Spurs, citing the squad's quality - in the same week they were boosted by Gareth Bale signing a new contract with the club.

"He has been to England. He has been to Chelsea," Redknapp said. "Things did not work out for him. The chairman at Tottenham (Daniel Levy) feels that he can do the job at Tottenham. He has certainly got the players.

"I think that they have the players there to be a top-four team every year and to challenge for a championship. That is my opinion. They have got the players there."
