Liverpool have confirmed that midfielder Maxi Rodriguez will leave the club to join Newell's Old Boys in Argentina.

Maxi Rodriguez, 31, will leave Liverpool on a free transfer following the expiry of his contract earlier this summer, having spent two-and-a-half years at the club.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers had expressed his desire to keep Rodriguez, but was unable to convince him to stay at Anfield.

The Argentine international was an important figure in the early days of Kenny Dalglish's reign as manager but fell out of favour last season to become a peripheral figure at the club, making just 12 Premier League appearances for Liverpool last season

Nevertheless, Rodriguez's record at Liverpool was good, scoring 17 goals in 73 appearances. He now rejoins the club where began his career before joining Espanyol in 2002,
