Gonzalo Higuain is hopeful Real Madrid can tie up the signing of Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Luka Modric in the near future.

Modric has told Spurs he wants to leave the club, and it is believed the Croatia star is determined to force a move to the Bernabeu despite reported interest from the likes of Paris Saint Germain, Manchester United and Chelsea.

It is reported that the two clubs are close to reaching an agreement over a fee, and Higuain told AS: "I saw at Modric at Euro 2012 and also at Tottenham.

"He is a player who loves the club and us. I wish to close the deal as quickly as possible if it is for the good of the team."

Madrid full-back Alvaro Arbeloa had earlier expressed similar sentiments.

"Modric is a great player," Arbeloa said. "I'm happy that he may sign for Real Madrid. We have lots of good midfielders, so he will have to compete with them to earn his place."

Centre-back Pepe added: "I know he's a good player."
