Newcastle have missed out on the capture of Luuk de Jong following confirmation the striker had signed for Borussia Monchengladbach.

The Magpies had made the striker one of their top summer targets and tabled a bid believed to be in the region of £12 million. The offer was batted back by Dutch side FC Twente and Gladbach moved into pole position for the Netherlands international.

De Jong dealt a hammer blow to Newcastle last week when claiming he was only interested in a move to the Bundesliga and he has been granted his wish by inking a contract to 2017.

"We are very pleased that it's now done and that Luuk will be able to travel to our training camp at Tegernsee on Friday," Gladbach sporting director Max Eberl told the club's official website.

"We have secured the services of a very talented striker with Luuk, who has international experience under his belt with Twente and the Dutch national side, despite his tender age of 21."

Newcastle have now trained their sights on securing a deal to bring Andy Carroll back to the club from Liverpool.
