Reports suggest that Newcastle are awaiting a response from FC Twente having lodged a €4 million (£3.1m) bid for defender Douglas.

Douglas, 24, has been a transfer target for Newcastle for some time and it is believed that the new offer is not far off meeting Twente's asking price for the player.

The Magpies had been in talks with Twente over a possible deal for striker Luuk de Jong, but the Netherlands international has since completed a transfer to German side Borussia Monchengladbach.

The pursuit of Douglas, though, has been drawn-out with the Brazilian needing to remain in his adopted country until near the end of next month to represent them at international level, having been granted residency.

Although Newcastle have identified Douglas, along with Lille full-back Mathieu Debuchy, as their main transfer targets for the coming weeks, the club have been unwilling to bow to Twente's demands in recent weeks, with the Dutch side keen on getting the biggest price possible for their asset.
