QPR midfielder Joey Barton has confirmed he is to train with League Two side Fleetwood Town next week in order to get his fitness levels up.

Barton was stripped of the QPR captaincy last month and fined six weeks' wages, after being hit with a 12-match ban by the FA for his actions during the final game of the Premier League season against Manchester City.

His elbow on Carlos Tevez and clashes with Sergio Aguero and Vincent Kompany left his Hoops career hanging in the balance - but the club decided not to sack him.

However, he was told he was not welcome on QPR's summer tour of Asia - and so has decided to keep his condition up with a spell at Fleetwood.

"Looking forward to training with Fleetwood Town for the week," Barton tweeted. "Will get a much-needed sweat on.

"Still have three years left at QPR. Exciting times for the club, which I intended to be a part of. Need to get some fitness in the meantime.

"Fleetwood are a young club going places. Five promotions in the last few years. If I help some of their young players, great. Training with them will certainly help me with my short-term fitness and my plan [to] be as fit as possible during my 12-game ban."
