Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney believes Robin van Persie would be a "great addition to the squad" if a deal can be reached this summer.

Van Persie, 29, has been heavily linked with a £20 million move to Manchester United over the past few days, with just one year remaining on his current Arsenal contract.

With Manchester City and Juventus seemingly already out of the running, it appears that should Van Persie leave Emirates Stadium this summer, Old Trafford will be his eventual destination.

Rooney was quick to praise his potential strike partner, adding that he considers the Dutchman to be a "fantastic player"

"Of course he's a player that I admire," Rooney told the Daily Mirror. "He's a fantastic player, he's been amazing for Arsenal over many years.

"Last season was probably his best season of all, he scored a lot of goals. If he does come here he would be a great addition to the squad."

Asked whether he could play in tandem with Van Persie, Rooney added: "I'd like to think so - but you'd have to ask the manager about that. There's a lot of forwards here already with myself, [Danny] Welbeck, Chicharito and [Dimitar] Berba, who's still here. So there's a lot of forwards fighting for a place."
