Arsenal striker Robin van Persie has undergone a medical ahead of his expected move to Manchester United.

After playing for the Netherlands in midweek, Van Persie returned to London on Thursday - before being picked up and driven to Bridgewater Hospital in Manchester to complete a medical.

Traffic on the route to Manchester delayed his arrival until the evening, with the 29-year-old then staying late into the night to complete the various tests required.

Assuming no complications arise from the medical, United hope to formally complete the signing of last year's Premier League top scorer on Friday.

The deal needs to be signed before noon if Van Persie is to be available to make his United debut against Everton on Monday.

"His agent is in discussions with David Gill right about now," United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said on Thursday. "We hope all the things will be tied up, although sometimes medicals do take a bit longer. I am sure he will be available for Monday's game."

United are believed to be set to pay around £24 million for Van Persie, with around £15m of that upfront and the rest based on performance-related add-ons. The Dutchman is set to sign a contract worth in excess of £200,000-per-week.

Van Persie, who had a year to run on his deal at the Emirates, made it clear earlier in the summer that he would not be signing a new contract with Arsenal, after disagreeing with manager Arsene Wenger and the Gunners hierarchy about the club's ambitions.

Manchester City and Juventus had also shown interest in the player, but Arsenal reluctantly agreed to sell to last year's Premier League runners up after United significantly increased their offer.
