The FA has charged Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew following an altercation with an assistant referee in the club's game against Tottenham.

Pardew, 51, has until 4pm on August 23 to respond to the charge, and decide if he wishes to appeal against his punishment.

Following the incident on Saturday, the Newcastle manager was openly apologetic, which would suggest he is unlikely to contest his potential suspension.

He said: "It was ridiculous and I apologised publicly. He was right in front of me and I thought the ball was out and I shoved him. I went to see him and told him it was stupid and I don't know what I was thinking.''

Pardew reacted angrily having thought the official had missed a throw-in for his side moments before Spurs shot narrowly wide.

He was immediately sent to the stand after a discussion between referee Martin Atkinson and fourth official Lee Mason.
