Allardyce: Berbatov too expensive for Hammers

Sam Allardyce has ruled out making a move for Dimitar Berbatov, saying the striker is too expensive for West Ham.

Berbatov, 31, was Manchester United's record signing, when Sir Alex Ferguson paid Tottenham £30.75 million for his services in 2008.

The Bulgarian is thought to be available for a far lower fee - perhaps around £5 million - but Allardyce said his wages would stop the Hammers entering the bidding.

"I don't think we have got the finance for Dimitar Berbatov," he told Sky Sports. "The financial package for the player's salary is one I think would be beyond us."

West Ham were willing to commit £19 million in loan and transfer fees to sign Andy Carroll, who was reluctant to move to Upton Park, and Allardyce is looking for another striker.

Berbatov only started five league games for United last season and has been pushed further down the pecking order by the signing of Robin van Persie.

He was not even on the bench for Saturday's 3-2 victory over Fulham and has also been linked with QPR.
