Vurnon Anita has insisted he is prepared to play at the back for Newcastle, despite making it clear his preference is a place in the middle of the park.

Anita arrived from Ajax in the summer with a lofty reputation as a central midfielder. The Netherlands international was expected to challenge Cheik Tiote and Yohan Cabaye for a place in midfield, but an injury crisis has seen him deployed at right back.

Danny Simpson is Newcastle's No. 1 right back, but he limped off against Aston Villa and Anita is prepared to continue to fill in for the good of the team.

"We have got two injuries on that side, so if the manager needs me on that side, I will do my best for the team," Anita told the club's official website.

"It went well against Aston Villa. As a right back you can come forward a lot, so I did that also and yes, I think it was a good performance.

"Central midfield is my position, so the main focus is on the midfield, but if the manager needs me on the right side, I can also play there."
