Wenger: If Sagna's unhappy, he can leave

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes defender Bacary Sagna was wrong to criticise the club's transfer policy in a contentious interview that has cast doubt over his future at Emirates Stadum.

Wenger insists he still expects full-back Sagna to sign a new contract at Arsenal, but indicated he is frustrated with his decision to criticise the sale of Alex Song to Barcelona last month.

The Arsenal manager spoke on Thursday of his belief that Sagna's interview was not portrayed 100 per cent accurately, but nevertheless he is determined to ensure his squad do not speak out of turn as the Gunners attempt to build on their win at Liverpool by defeating Southampton this weekend.

"I believe any player or any employee always has to defend the company he works for and if he is not completely happy with it, then he has to go somewhere else," Wenger told reporters in his pre-match briefing. "I say the same thing to everyone and this is basically what I believe.

"He has always shown total commitment on the football pitch, for the team and the club. That is much more important than a little-bit-twisted article in the newspaper.

"I have had a chat with him about this situation and my impression is he loves the club and will stay here. It's important to understand what he wanted to say. It is also important you understand what people feel about the club and their job. It's always important to have good communication with them."

Meanwhile, Wenger has revealed that long-term injury victim Jack Wilshere is edging closer to a comeback, as he is closing in on a return to full training with the first team.
