Everton teenager Ross Barkley has joined Sheffield Wednesday on a month's loan.

Barkley, 18, has linked up with the Wednesday squad for Friday's Championship match at Brighton.

The winger has played nine times for Everton since breaking into the side at the start of last season.

But manager David Moyes has been keen to loan out the midfielder for some regular first-team football.

Moyes said last month that Barkley could benefit from a spell outside the Premier League in the same way that a young David Beckham did when Manchester United loaned him to Preston in 1995.

"I want him to go out and play," Moyes said. "It seems right. I remember David Beckham coming to play when I was at Preston. You've got to remember Ross is still a boy.

"We put him in last year and he's doing well. But it would be easier for him to go to the Championship and make his mistakes rather than in the Premier League."
