Teenage winger Danny Rose scored on his first league start to effectively end Arsenal's title hopes as Tottenham beat their North London rivals 2-1 at White Hart Lane.

On his full Spurs debut, Rose scored a superb volley with his first touch of the ball to fire Harry Redknapp's side in front, and Gareth Bale doubled the advantage shortly after half-time.

Robin van Persie came off the bench in his first game since November following an ankle injury and immediately made an impression. His opening strike was well saved by Heurelho Gomes. And just moments later, it was Gomes to the rescue once again, tipping van Persie's perfectly curled free-kick over the crossbar for a corner.

Nicklas Bendtner did pull a goal back for Arsenal with five minutes left after a cross from Theo Walcott but Spurs held on to boost their hopes of finishing fourth and clinching a Champions League spot.

Phil Jagielka's injury-time own goal rescued a point for Aston Villa as they drew 2-2 at home to Everton.

Tim Cahill twice put the visitors ahead, but Gabriel Agbonlahor and Jagielka's helping hand ensured Villa recorded their third consecutive draw at home as their faint hopes of Champions League football hit another setback.

Wigan missed a golden opportunity to ease their relegation worries as they were held to a goalless draw by an already-relegated and understrength Portsmouth at the DW Stadium.

Pompey's Jamie Ashdown was by far the busier goalkeeper but his display was certainly not in the brilliant category as the Latics squandered a number of chances. Although the draw lifted Wigan up a place to 16th they are only five points above the bottom three with the visit of Arsenal to come at the weekend.
