Thomas Vermaelen will miss the next "two to three weeks" of the season after suffering a calf injury during the North London derby against Tottenham.

Vermaelen went down after just 19 minutes following an innocuous off-the-ball incident, which saw him pull up after glancing the ball to fellow centre back Sol Campbell.

Arsenal went on to lose the game 2-1, and the club have confirmed on their official website that they expect the Belgian defender to miss the majority of the remainder of the season.

"Thomas Vermaelen will be sidelined for "two to three weeks" after suffering a calf injury during the North London derby," read a statement.

"Vermaelen has only missed one Premier League game this season - and that was due to suspension - but he is certainly out of this weekend's trip to Wigan and the home game against Manchester City on April 24."
