John Terry's knee injury will keep him out for weeks rather than months, Chelsea have revealed on their official Twitter feed.

The Chelsea skipper was stretchered off during the Blues' 1-1 draw with Liverpool after a nasty collision with Luis Suarez.

An MRI scan into the injury has revealed no significant damage to his cruciate ligaments.

"Chelsea Football Club's medical team will conduct further tests over the next two or three days once the swelling has subsided to determine how long John will be out, but it will be a matter of weeks not months." the club said on their website.

The news comes as something of a relief for Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo, who saw his side leak ten goals while Terry served a four-match ban.

On his return to domestic action on Sunday, Terry made an immediate impact as he nodded his side ahead after 20 minutes, and the Blues defence struggled in his absence after he was carried off shortly before half-time.

Prior to the announcement, goalkeeper Petr Cech said he was confident the club could cope with Terry's absence.

"We managed to play games without him and we have players who will have a chance to impress," Cech said. "I have confidence. Obviously, it's a pity we will lose him again but we have a large squad and quality defenders to deal with that.

"It's important to have people who can step up. This is a chance for the others to shine and we are going to deal with his loss for him."

Cech is also upbeat about Terry's ability to get back to fitness quickly, adding: "He knows what it takes to come back in good shape and as soon as possible. He always heals well and he will come back soon.

"We saw him afterwards and wished him good luck. We hope the danger is not going to be severe and something that will just keep him out for a few weeks maximum."
