Liverpool will struggle to keep star striker Luis Suarez if they cannot gain Champions League football according to the player's international team-mate, Edinson Cavani.

Cavani, who has also been the target of transfer speculation recently, has formed a deadly partnership with Suarez up front for Uruguay, propelling La Celeste to fourth place in the South American World Cup qualifying table.

And the Napoli striker is convinced his compatriot has the talent to light up Europe's premier club competition, the Champions League.

But if the Anfield club cannot reach the Champions League by the end of next season, Cavani predicts Suarez may have to leave Brendan Rodgers' side to fulfill his European potential.

"The fact is that Luis is one of the top strikers in the world and he wants to be playing Champions League football," Cavani was quoted as saying in the Sun.

"Of course, Liverpool are not going to make it this season. But if they don't make it next season then they will have a problem.

"Luis would love to play in the Champions League with Liverpool. But if he can't then a player of his quality needs to play for a club where he can."

However, Cavani said it would be a hard decision for Suarez to move away from Merseyside and the Premier League, with the 26-year-old admitting Suarez has been trying to convince him to make the switch from the Serie A.

"I know it meant a lot when Liverpool stood by him through some tough times and he has a lot of love for the club and their fans," Cavani said.

"When I speak with Luis he speaks with admiration about Liverpool and the Premier League. He even encourages me to play in England."
