David Beckham has played his final match as a professional footballer after he was left out of the Paris Saint-Germain squad for their trip to Lorient on Sunday.

Beckham, who announced earlier this month that he was to retire at the end of the season, will play no part in PSG's final match of the campaign.

The 38-year-old was named captain for PSG's 3-1 win over Brest at the Parc des Princes last weekend, but he had suggested afterwards that he would not play again as Lorient's plastic pitch threatened to cause him injury as a result of a ruptured Achilles he suffered while playing for AC Milan in 2010. PSG have already wrapped up the Ligue 1 title.

Beckham received a standing ovation from the PSG crowd in the Brest encounter, and the midfielder was in tears as he was substituted before the end.

Beckham has been tipped by PSG manager Carlo Ancelotti to go into management, and the former England captain has considered buying an MLS franchise once he hangs his boots up.
