Everton 'will back Martinez in the market'

Everton chief executive Robert Elstone has promised that Roberto Martinez will have the financial support necessary to launch a push for the Champions League.

Martinez was confirmed as the new manager at Goodison Park on a four-year contract on Wednesday.

Chairman Bill Kenwright immediately set the bar high by revealing in a press conference that Martinez had pledged to guide the club into the Champions League.

That would be a tough task for a club who, despite finishing sixth last season, have operated with one of the lowest budgets in the Premier League under previous manager David Moyes.

Elstone said: "I think we've got a top, top manager, which is exciting. I think we've got a manager who understands Everton, which was obviously really important to us, and that's exciting.

"But I'm also excited at being able to give Roberto the support that he will need to achieve his objectives. He'll get phenomenal support from the board and especially the chairman, but I would also say he'll also get phenomenal support from everybody at Goodison.

"I know all the team here are thrilled by the prospect of working with him. This is a proper football club. Our objectives are all about what happens on the field at Goodison Park, so all our efforts to raise money, all our efforts to be more efficient in how we do things, it's all directed at Roberto.

"I think it's a really exciting phase for the club, and we can wait to start to get to work with it."
