Jerome fined £50k for gambling

Cameron Jerome has been fined £50,000 after he admitted a number of breaches of Football Association betting regulations.

The Stoke City striker has also been watned to his future conduct after confessing to repeated breaches of the FA rules on gambling.

Jerome, 27, has escaped a ban from the Independent Regulatory Commission hearing, which took place yesterday, after he requested a personal hearing.

The striker's fine is subject to appeal, but no suspension from Premier League games has been handed down and he will be available for selection for Stoke's opening game of the season against Liverpool on Saturday.

Escaping a ban will come as a huge relief to Jerome, who recently claimed he feels he has his best chance of establishing himself as a regular in the Stoke side, following the club's decision to replace former manager Tony Pulis with Mark Hughes.

A statement on the FA's website read: "Stoke City's Cameron Jerome has been fined £50,000, subject to any appeal, following an Independent Regulatory Commission hearing.

"Jerome, who was also severely warned as to his future conduct, admitted a number of breaches of The FA's Betting Rules and requested a personal hearing which took place on Tuesday 13 August 2013."

Jerome's case is the second high profile Premier League betting case in recent months, following that of Tottenham midfielder Andros Townsend.

Townsend was fined £18,000 in June and banned for four months, three of those months suspended, for a breach of betting regulations.

That meant he missed playing for England 21s in the European Championships after he withdrew from the squad.
