David Moyes has confirmed that Manchester United have not bid for Tottenham winger Gareth Bale.

Bale is expected to join Real Madrid in a world-record deal but there were stories on Monday that a second club had submitted an offer for him.

And when interviewed after Monday's 0-0 draw with Chelsea, United manager Moyes fuelled speculation by not giving a direct answer.

He replied: "I said at the start when I got the job that Manchester United will always be interested in the best players and we're always looking to try and improve the team."

However, when pressed on the issue in his subsequent press conference if United had entered the market for the double PFA Footballer of the Year, Moyes replied: "No."

It is thought that United were interested in Bale, who scored 26 goals last season, but accepted that he wanted to join Real.

Moyes has endured a frustrating summer in the transfer market with Uruguayan youngster Guillermo Varela United's only signing so far but the Scot is adamant he and the club remain ambitious.

He reiterated: "The board and myself would always be looking to sign who we think are the best players, whoever they are."
